GP514 - Poetry and Spoken Word

Our host Gerald Everett Jones and co-hosts Cheyenne Cockrell and Thomas Page consider how poetry and spoken word before an audience can both entertain and stimulate the creative process. #amwriting #selfpub #poetry #podcast

  • What IS the difference between poetry and spoken word?
  • Why do you think live poetry readings and spoken-word presentations have become so popular?
  • Radio shows and podcasts – particularly podcasts – of poetry seem to be gaining in popularity. Do you think this is a new opportunity for poets?
  • Have you ever tried to write poetry? Spoken word?

Then we're joined by special guest, creative coach Terrie Silverman, of CreativeRites (www.creativerites.com) who responds to:

  • How do you help people develop and investigate their stories – whether for the page or the stage?
  • How does your own work inform your teaching?
  • You seem to have a talent for drawing expression out of people who want to write but haven’t had much previous success at it. What’s the secret to getting it all to flow?
  • Have you ever found that someone’s work is painful, either to them or to the group? How do you deal with that?
  • Of the people who intend to write memoir, how often to you find it morphing into something else?
  • Is self-expression always therapeutic?
  • What are the challenges of performing your writing or your stories?
  • How can our listeners get in touch with you?

And, as ever, there's lots of advice on how to get published, including the support resources at our website getpublishedradio.com.

GP502 - Museum Field Trip

Before a hushed audience at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), our show host Gerald Everett Jones discloses secrets behind The Baptism by 19th century painter Julius Leblanc Stewart.

The painting, which LACMA now owns, shows a christening in a plush private parlor, attended by 21 people. The portraits are so realistic, the individuals should be recognizable. For more than a century, the rumor in the art world has been this is a Vanderbilt family event. However, the heirs and the curators of their estates all deny any association with the painting.

Gerald's original research discloses why a bitter feud between Cornelius Vanderbilt II and banker J. P. Morgan is at the heart of the matter. He fictionalized this sensational story in his novel Bonfire of the Vanderbilts.

GP 513 Writing a Memoir

It's not surprising that many first-time authors want to do their memoirs. And memoir is an extremely popular genre with readers these days. Our host Gerald Everett Jones talks with cohost journalist Cheyenne Cockrell about how to navigate the choppy waters of such reality-based stories. For example, when should you change the names to protect the guilty? #amwriting #selfpub #podcast

News update: The memoir Gerald wrote with Rebecca Schaper - The Light in His Soul: Lessons from My Brother's Schizophrenia - was #1 Amazon Hot New Release last May.
