GP719 Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction

Host Gerald Everett Jones and his co-hosts Cheyenne Cockrell and Thomas Page have a roundtable discussion. #amwriting #selfpub #podcast

  1. What's the definition of Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic?
  2. What topics are included in this genre (worst-case political scenarios, cautionary tales, unintended consequences, day after Armageddon or The Rapture, worldwide pandemic, meteor impacts, aliens, and climate disaster)?
  3. Are these stories just variations on Horror?
  4. Can we think about these as simulations, or lessons learned?
  5. Is humanity's superior trait adaptability or intelligence?
  6. Are these books trying to help us, or avoid something-- or just give us a thrill by exploiting our worst fears?

And, as ever, there's lots of advice on how to get published, including the support resources at our website getpublishedradio.com.

GP718 Mystery and True Crime

Host Gerald Everett Jones and his co-hosts Cheyenne Cockrell and Thomas Page discuss “Mystery and True Crime” with special guest author Marvin J. Wolf. Wolf is the author of the Rabbi Ben mysteries: For Whom the Shofar Blows, A Scribe Dies in Brooklyn, and A Tale of Two Rabbis. Marv responds to our questions, including:

  1. How does mystery fiction differ from true crime?
  2. What is a police procedural? Do all mysteries fall into that category?
  3. Have you ever come across a story that you thought was too painful or too troubling to write?
  4. How does the training and skillset of a journalist inform the work of a mystery novelist?
  5. Is it a truism that social media is killing journalism these days?
  6. A Scribe Dies in Brooklyn is full of Judaic scholarship. Did you just absorb all that detail over the years, or was it a research project in itself?

GP724 - Spirituality and Metaphysics

When we first considered doing a show on the nonfiction book category of spirituality and metaphysics, we weren't sure how our audience would receive the topic. After all, we're not about preaching to anyone. The world of self-publishing is a big tent, with a broad welcome mat - and we want to keep it that way.

Our first impulse was to invite one or more authors whose books are popular and get their views on how people have responded to their work. But then we had the idea to invite someone who is mainly a reader, who has read widely and doesn't necessarily have a personal message to deliver.

Our featured guest is Denis Hutchison is co-proprietor with his wife Lois of Afterglow of Sedona (Arizona). We only found out as we were interviewing him that he used to have his own spiritually centered radio show in Phoenix. (Denis does have a deep, mellow voice that is comforting in itself.) #amwriting #selfpub #podcast

His observations and insights about spirituality and metaphysics may surprise you. And - considering that this episode has logged many more listeners than anything we've ever put out there - many of you have found value in his remarks.

Our host Gerald Everett Jones and his co-hosts sci-fi author Thomas Page and journalist Cheyenne Cockrell also enjoy a spirited, full and frank exchange of views among themselves.

Gerald Everett Jones is author of Clifford's Spiral, a novel about a stroke survivor trying to piece together fragmented memories of his life, loves, and lusts.
